The man who sang “The Cover of Rolling Stone” has died.

Rolling Stone magazine reports Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show died Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida, at the age of 81.

Sawyer had lost an eye to a car accident a few years before the band formed, so he was known as “Dr. Hook” because of his eye patch.

“Cover of the Rolling Stone” became a hit and landed the band on the magazine’s cover.

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show had other hits with “Sylvia’s Mother” and “When You’re In Love with a Beautiful Woman.”

Sawyer left the band in the early 1980s and last performed live in 2015.
